Gemotions

The bookstore smelled of aged paper and forgotten dreams, a scent that usually soothed Elias. Today, however, it only amplified the leaden weight in his chest. He slumped onto a dusty stool, the leather groaning in protest. Reaching for a volume of poetry – something light, he thought – he pulled “Leaves of Grass” from the shelf.

His fingers, clumsy with fatigue, fumbled with the brittle pages. A small, folded piece of paper fluttered free. He unfolded it, the crease a deep valley in the aged paper. The handwriting was elegant, a flowing script that he couldn't immediately place.

"Remember the bluebells by the creek," it read. He sank back against the shelf, the simple phrase hitting him with an unexpected force. A memory, fuzzy around the edges, of childhood laughter and the sun on his face, flickered to life. The tightness in his shoulders eased ever so slightly.
